CEI Summer/Winter School 2023

Community Economies Institute announces the 2024 Summer/Winter School.

Researching Postcapitalist Possibilities, 18 to 27 June

Round 1, Expressions of Interest are called for. Due by 8 December 2023.

There will be a second round, opening early 2024 and closing 15 March 2024 (with places subject to the uptake in Round 1). 

The School is for PhD students, early career researchers and others. It focuses on community and diverse economies research and practice:

  • The first part focuses on foundational texts (such as The End of Capitalism (as we knew it)), core concepts (such as antiessentialism, poststructuralism and performativity) and thinking techniques (such as reading for difference). 
  • The second part focuses on contemporary applications of this foundational material.

The  School is run as a small group intensive, with numbers at each node capped at twelve. 

The 10-day program includes in-depth reading of foundational texts, short lectures, activities to deepen your understanding and apply what you learn to your own research or project, and individual research meetings and panels with members of the CEI.

For 2024, the five nodes (subject to number of participants) are:

  • Face-to-face, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Trondheim
    Led by Assoc. Professor Elizabeth Barron (NTNU) & Professor Kevin St. Martin (Rutgers University, US).
  • Face-to-face, Waipapa Taumata Rau | The University of Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand
    Led by Assoc. Professor Kelly Dombroski (Massey University), and Dr Molly Mullen & Dr Emma Sharp (The University of Auckland).
  • Online in the Americas (US Eastern Daylight Time)
    Led by Dr Ethan Miller (CEI) & Dr Bradley Wilson (Centre for Resilient Communities, West Virginia Uni.).
  • Online in the Asia-Pacific region (Australian Eastern Standard Time)
    Led by Assoc. Professor Jenny Cameron (CEI) and Dr Pryor Placino (Western Sydney University).
  • Online in Europe (Central European Daylight Time)
    Led by Dr Ottavia Cima (Uni. of Bern, Switzerland) and Dr Pieta Savinotko (Uni. of Eastern Finland).
